Africa's unity loose strands

Foreign Affairs Minister Aziz Pahad says there can be no African Renaissance if people fail to work in partnership to ensure that more lives are improved on the continent.

Pahad was speaking at the opening of the 9th yearly African Renaissance conference in Durban yesterday.

Speaking to delegates from Africa and the US, Pahad said there could be no African Renaissance without peace and security, nor while millions of Africans were still dying.

"We could be confident that today is better than yesterday and the challenge we face is that tomorrow should be better than today.

"Why would people be interested in the lofty ideas of the African Renaissance when they cannot feed themselves and their families?" asked Pahad.

The conference agreed more effort was needed to ensure the African Renaissance was achieved.

The conference will explore questions relating to peace, democracy and development, through partnerships.

The conference ends today.
