After finishing second on the Castle Premiership log to qualify for the 2008 African Champions League, Silver Stars will soon venture into the transfer market.
This was announced by Larry Brookstone, Stars' co-director, at the club's end-of-season awards ceremony at Sun City yesterday. But Brookstone was quick to point out that the Tycoons will not be making wholesale changes in the new season.
"We have to bring in two or three new players to the team in the new season. I know a lot of people are expecting massive changes now that there is money that will be coming as a result of our partnership with the Bafokeng nation," he said.
"[But] we want to keep the winning team ... because they have done a great job this season. They won the richest club soccer tournament on the continent [Telkom Knockout Cup] and reached the Absa Cup semifinals.
"In addition, we are now through to the African Champions League in our fourth season in the elite division," said Brookstone.
He confirmed that Molefi Lewape and Solomon Mithi have already been released by Stars.
Brookstone said they will be registering with the South African Football Association to participate in the African Champions League, which will help expose their players to international football.
"It's sad that youngsters like Stanley Kgatla and Michael Khaile are not in Bafana Bafana."
Owen Da Gama, Stars' coach, commended the management for supporting the team throughout the season. During the awards ceremony, Khaile walked away with the player of the season and players' player of the season crowns. Other recipients were Hareaipha Marumo (top goalscorer with 13 goals), Dale Studzinski (most improved player) and assistant coach Thierry Molonzo (chairman's award).
Meanwhile, Stars and Royal Bafokeng Holdings will officially announce their partnership on Thursday, which will also see the club being renamed Platinum Stars at a later.
