Coming, going, staying but Bucs sail ahead

Against the wishes of some of their supporters, Orlando Pirates look set to keep Bibey Mutombo as their head coach next season.

There have been pockets of discontent from sections of the Ghost who feel Mutombo, who has captained the Bucs ship for four months, has deviated from blending results with beautiful football.

But management feel the Europe-qualified Congolese has carried out his mandate and reached the targets set when he joined the Buccaneers.

"Unless there was a candidate with a compelling case, Mutombo will remain the head coach," said Bucs' chairman Irvin Khoza recently.

"The man has reached all targets, taking the team off relegation and finishing the season in the top five. Frankly, we don't have any basis to fire him," Khoza said.

While Bucs have been decisive, the same cannot be said of their rivals Kaizer Chiefs who will only "make an announcement later this week", according to manager Bobby Motaung.

But indications are that Amakhosi will release Serbian Kosta Papic, who is partly responsible for Maritzburg United's relegation and Chiefs' failure to qualify for the SAA Supa 8, a title they won last October.

With the season finally over, SuperSport United are expected to set the ball rolling by announcing their new mentor after parting ways with Pitso Mosimane who becomes Bafana Bafana's full-time assistant coach.

United are expected to announce Gavin Hunt as their new coach some time today. Bloemfontein Celtic have already installed part-time Bafana Bafana assistant, Khabo Zondo, as their man for the new season.

Rich Bidvest Wits are still sifting through piles of applications for a man to take over from acting coach Eric Tinkler who took over from Boebie Solomons. Wits tried and were turned down by Muhsin Ertugral and have also been linked to Gordon Igesund.

Mamelodi Sundowns are holding on to Igesund with reports of a promise of an even fatter pay cheque.

Silver Stars have not made up their minds about who will replace Owen da Gama if he finally joins Amakhosi.

Ajax will most certainly hold on to Ertugral who is only prepared to leave them for Naturena - Chiefs' country.

Moroka Swallows were still trying to hold on to Hunt but it is now clear they have to embark on a renewed search.
