Promising athlete Cansas Nhlapo, 19, from Mpumalanga is desperately looking for a team in Gauteng.

And Nhlapo did his chances no harm by winning the 8km race in the boys 18 to 19 age category at the Central Gauteng Athletics cross-country meet at Erwatt in Vosloorus at the weekend.

Nhlapo led the big field from the halfway mark and never looked back. He clocked 25 minutes and 10 seconds.

"With a permanent team and proper guidance I hope to improve my performance,'' said Nhlapo, who is from Leandra.

The speedy athlete is living with relatives in Tsakane while he looks for a club in Gauteng. Last month Nhlapo came second in the 5000m at the SA Youth and Junior Championships held in Pretoria.

Other winners:

Men: 4km - Phaswane Thuso (11:56); 8km - Theo Rafiri (28:10); 12km: Themba Miya (36:54).

Women: 4km - Chanelle Olivier (14:03).
