The planned R12billion monorail from Soweto to Johannesburg is definitely long overdue, and should be welcomed by all who believe the giant township deserves a world-class transport system.

The planned R12billion monorail from Soweto to Johannesburg is definitely long overdue, and should be welcomed by all who believe the giant township deserves a world-class transport system.

Commuters travel to and from Soweto and Johannesburg daily, depending on an erratic train service and risking their lives in taxis.

For many decades they have had to be content with a poor public transport system with little regard for customer service.

Choice should thankfully force the likes of Metrorail, Putco and the taxis to jack up their service.

Finance and economic affairs MEC Paul Mashatile said no one from Soweto should wait more than 15 minutes for transport. This should be the vision for the country's public transport system as we prepare for the 2010 World Cup.
