Against a backdrop of political turmoil, violence and a school boycott in Khutsong, a state of the art school has been opened at nearby Fochville in Merafong.
Formerly a structure made of chirpboard, Greenspark Primary School has raised hope about the future of education in the strife-torn area. The school was handed over on Tuesday.
The school has been rebuilt by the North West Department of Public Works at a cost of R7,8million.
North West MEC for education Johannes Tselapedi said he was confident that the situation in Khutsong would be resolved.
Tselapedi said residents of Khutsong should learn from the other residents of Merafong that North West was delivering.
"They are peaceful and we are delivering services to them. All we want is for pupils and teachers [in Khutsong] to go back to school. We cannot afford to pay them when they do not do their jobs," he said.
The school was handed over by the province's MEC for public works, Howard Yawa.
For 20 years the school had only 10 chirpboard classrooms. One of the classrooms was divided for use as an administration office and a staff-room.
Yawa said the provincial government was determined to work hard to reduce the classrooms backlog in the province.
"We are determined to eradicate the 'under-tree' classrooms and the platooning system," Yawa said.
