Seven people, among them four women, were yesterday arrested in connection with the theft of assorted items at the OR Tambo International Airport.

The stolen items, estimated to be worth more than R1million, were confiscated from the suspects by the police.

Dennis Adriao, police spokesman, said some of the suspects were employed at the airport, while the rest were former employees.

"A number of theft cases have been reported at the airport. After a tip-off, police apprehended the suspects in Tembisa where they were allegedly selling the stolen items," he said.

"Most of the items were stolen from a large shop at the airport. They included African artifacts, clothing, jewellery and homeware," said Andrio.

The seven will appear in the Kempton Park magistrates' court today.
