Renaming gurus are crafty

The row started by eThekwini municipality over the renaming process has given a field day to opportunists such as Musa Madonsela, as reflected in Sowetan of May 14.

The row started by eThekwini municipality over the renaming process has given a field day to opportunists such as Musa Madonsela, as reflected in Sowetan of May 14.

Madonsela is right to express concerns about violence and confrontations, but it is obnoxious of him to distort what the IFP said on the issue.

He says that naming Mangosuthu Highway was undemocratic because there was "no input from the people".

I cannot claim to know the details of the process followed, but I know that from the day Mangosuthu Highway was opened until we attained freedom, not a soul, not even the latter-day anti-Mangosuthu apostles, raised any objections.

It amazes me to observe the levels to which Madonsela, Siyanda Mhlongo, James Nxumalo and others of their ilk stoop in their anti-Buthelezi selective morality.

If they were honestly and objectively committed to their argument, they would long have campaigned for the renaming and changing of every city, town, township, village, building, street and province because almost all came into existence in similar or worse circumstances.

They must also campaign that President Thabo Mbeki consult them on his cabinet, ambassadors, directors-general.
