Name, shame tactics will not create job equity

The Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana and his henchmen should immediately cease their inflammatory language and "name and shame" tactics in an effort to try to enforce employment equity.

The Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana and his henchmen should immediately cease their inflammatory language and "name and shame" tactics in an effort to try to enforce employment equity.

What is needed is open, constructive discussion, which must take place in good faith.

Such discussions would be in the best interest of achieving the shared objective of creating an environment of sufficient skilled people of all races who can access the opportunities for which their knowledge and experience qualify them.

For the minister to use the media to persecute private businesses without engaging in a constructive manner in any way, shape or form, is setting a dangerous precedent.

This attitude will certainly not encourage foreign investment and, therefore, be detrimental to job creation and economic growth.

If the alleged employment equity "offenders" are indeed in the wrong, then the minister needs to recognise that the name and shame tactic is not working.

If the allegations prove to be baseless, then the minister and his department will once again sit with egg on their faces, as was the case last year when indications of serious inaccuracies in the initial round of naming and shaming allegations surfaced.
