A 30-year-old man has been arrested for the murder of a Soweto security guard, Matome Matjiyeng, who was gunned down outside his house this week.

A Soweto police spokesman, Sefako Xaba, pictured, said the man was arrested at his home in Molapo, Soweto. He is believed to be also a guard, but employed by another security company.

"We are investigating and cannot at this stage say what the motive for the killing of Matjiyeng was," said Xaba

Matjiyeng, an employee of Fidelity Guards, was shot and killed on Wednesday outside his home in Phomolong when he arrived home from work at about 7am.

Matjiyeng's younger brother, Mathole, said that at first he thought the murder was related to Matjiyeng's work.

He later said he believed the killing was the result of a grudge after an unknown man twice came to Matjiyeng's house to speak to him but could not find him.

The man is said to have come to Matjiyeng's house on Tuesday night and on Wednesday morning.

Matjiyeng's body was found lying next to the driveway gate of his house shortly after the man had been to the house. He had been shot once in the chest.

"The police followed all the leads and we managed to catch a suspect. He is now in police custody but has not been charged," said Xaba.

The man will appear in court today.
