EJ Singwane High School advanced to the last 16 of the Silulumanzi Cup for Mbombela high schools after beating their neighbours Gedlembane High School 4-2 on penalties at Msogwaba stadium on Wednesday.

The game, which had ended deadlocked 1-all in regulation time, started at a slow pace but livened up to derby expectations as it progressed.

But Gedlembane looked the more aggressive of the two.

Their persistent attack finally paid off in the 30th minute when Thokozane Matukane capitalised on an error by Singwane's goalkeeper Sibusiso Madonsela, to score the opener.

Singwane were a totally different lot in the second half.

They switched from being ultra defensive to moving forward with purpose.

Sizwe Soko scored the equaliser in the 52nd minute.

The two sides had to settle for a penalty shootout to decide the winner, which Singwane won 4-2.
