Moripe games gets official

Willie Mooka, the president of Safa Tshwane, has announced that the association is planning to formalise the yearly Lucas "Masterpieces" Moripe tournament by incorporating it into the federation.

Safa and the games' local organising committee meet today to discuss the issue, said Mooka. Meanwhile, Safa Tshwane will hand over R25000 to the organisers. The money was donated by the Gauteng department of sports and recreation, and will be used towards settling some of the debts accrued during last year's tournament.

The games were thrown into turmoil when Patrice Motsepe, businessman and president of PSL team Mamelodi Sundowns, withdrew the R100000 sponsorship the had been making over a number of years.

"We are going to try and talk with them about formalising things, and creating some sense of accountability," Mooka said. "This is a very good thing thing they are doing, and we would hate to have it jeopardised by a perceived lack of professionalism."

Itumeleng Moloto, project coordinator of the organising committee, said they are open to doing things through Safa.

"Soccer is obviously their constituency, and the relationship between the LOC and Safa has not been strong so far," Moloto said.

"In any case, any funding from the government has to be channeled through the local federation. Therefore, we are looking forward to working with Safa."
