Comedians make people laugh and help them escape from their problems. Now, at long last, their good work will be rewarded.

The South African Comedy Awards will honour the country's funniest comics on September 17 at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town.

Tipped to nurture the country's comedic talent and to pay tribute to them, the awards will go a long way in enhancing the profession and its practitioners.

The national awards will recognise talented comedians, producers, journalists and cartoonists. They will acknowledge the work of our funniest men and women in the print and broadcast media.

Comprising four categories, the awards are made up of television, live comedy, print media and a general category.

In three instances, the public can vote for the best South African stand-up comedian of the year, for the best international comedy act or show and for the funniest TV commercial.

The awards will acknowledge work debuted between September and July this year.
