Bafana Bafana's 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Zambia has been earmarked to highlight the Confederation of African Football (CAF) 50th anniversary celebrations.
World Cup 2010 Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan said the celebrations will take place in Cape Town from September 1 to 10.
As a result, Cape Town's Newlands is favoured to host the second leg of a fixture that Bafana Bafana won 1-0 away in Lusaka last year.
South Africa is one of the four founder-members of the continental soccer governing body formed back in 1957 and will host the last of the celebrations already held in Cairo (Egypt), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Khartoum (Sudan).
"The celebrations will include CAF meetings, a banquet, recognition awards for top achievers over the past 50 years, with the game as the highlight. We will call a news conference once the breakdown is ready" Jordaan said.
"The celebrations are part of the African Union's resolution that 2007 be the year to focus on African football.
"After 50 years of its existence, we need to sit down and look at what CAF has achieved over the past 50 years and set targets for the next 50 years," said the former South African Football Association boss.
But Jordaan revealed he was still to receive a written go-ahead from the national soccer governing body for the match to be staged in Cape Town.
"I have submitted a written request to Safa and am still awaiting a response," Jordaan said.
However, permission is as good as granted after SA Football Ltd acting chief executive Sbu Mngadi let it slip that, in principle, permission has been given for the game to be staged in the Mother City.
Cape Town will be the second consecutive city to host a Nations Cup qualifier this year after Durban was given the green light to host the return leg against Chad, yesterday.
