Members of the South African Municipal Union Workers' Union (Samwu) and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) are ready to go on strike.

Members of the South African Municipal Union Workers' Union (Samwu) and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) are ready to go on strike.

Hundreds of members gathered in Pretoria yesterday and declared themselves prepared to stage the largest strike in South Africa's history.

Nehawu's Fikile Majola said public servants had reached a point where "enough was enough".

"This is going to be a long year. On Friday we met with representatives of public servants' unions. Some said we should go back to the negotiating table, but we said no, the government must call us when they are ready to revise their offer," he said. - Sipho Masombuka
