The Young Communist League (YCL) in KwaZulu-Natal has called on the ANC to act swiftly in disciplining three of its members who allegedly insulted the party's deputy president Jacob Zuma by referring to him as a rapist.
Two weeks ago it was reported that Mlungisi Ndlela, Phillip Mhlongo and Siyanda Mhlongo, all believed to be pro-Mbeki, were among people who made submissions to a commission of inquiry into the booing of Mbeki in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
Ndlela is former political adviser to eThekwini mayor, Obed Mlaba, Phillip Mhlongo is a former ANC employee of Greater Umsinga region, southern Zululand, and Siyanda is provincial executive member and former mayor of KwaDukuza.
They allegedly told the commission there were Zuma supporters hellbent on making KwaZulu-Natal a no-go area for Mbeki.
The president was severely embarrassed last year when he was heckled at the reburial ceremony of struggle icon Moses Mabhida. The ANC provincial executive committee in KwaZulu-Natal has denied reports they were behind the no-go zones set for Mbeki during a meeting attended by the president and other national executives recently.
Phillip Mhlongo is known to lead a pro-Mbeki lobby in the Bhambatha- Greater Umsinga region in southern Zululand, while Siyanda Mhlongo is accused of being part of a lobby seeking to dilute Zuma's support in KwaDukuza.
Siyanda is also reported to have argued at public meetings that ANC members should elect leaders of good moral standing at the ANC's national conference in December.
It was also reported that he publicly stated that this country would never be led by rapists and fraudsters, a statement construed to imply his rejection of Zuma.
The YCL called for the ANC to act harshly against the three.
"The so-called succession battle has produced dissident cadres who will stop at nothing to insult senior leaders in a barbaric fashion, which is foreign to the alliance," the YCL said.
Khaye Nkwanyana, the YCL provincial secretary said: "They will never succeed in their devilish anti-Zuma lobby."
He said that reports of a plot to assassinate Zuma were shocking.
