A 15-year-old pupil at Saint Christian Secondary School at Mtubatuba in northern Zululand appeared briefly in the Mtubatuba magistrates' court yesterday for the alleged murder of a senior police officer.

The girl and another suspect, also under the age of 18, and S'fiso Mthembu, 23, will be kept in police custody until their next appearance on May 21 for a bail application.

Captain Emmanuel Zwane, 38, who was also acting station commander of Hluhluwe police station, was found dead near his car on the N2 near Shikishela, Mtubatuba, on Tuesday last week.

He had five stab wounds - three on the head, one on the cheek and one on the neck. His wallet, a cellphone and service pistol were missing.

Police spokesman Muzi Mngomezulu said officers from the Richards Bay Organised Crime Unit were investigating the case. Zwane's firearm was recovered from one of the suspects.

Police believe the girl could have been used to pretend she was looking for a lift.
