About time coffins on wheels were buried

Your editorial comment "Coffins on wheels" on May 8 was spot on.

Your editorial comment "Coffins on wheels" on May 8 was spot on.

You rightly pointed out after the Bekkersdal story that taxi and bus commuters are daily exposed to these moving coffins, namely unroadworthy taxis and buses.

This issue is a national crisis because some of the dilapidated taxis that were supposed to be in scrap yards have found their way back on our roads.

And traffic officers do not seem to be doing a thing about them.

One area where these taxis, whose doors are falling off and whose seats are kept in place with wire are regularly seen in Braamfischerville.

Traffic officers stop the moving coffins near Dobsonville Shopping Centre only in the evenings, but then they never issue tickets or strip off their license discs.

It is about time that the traffic authorities pull up their socks and conduct serious roadblocks to flush out all unroadworthy taxis from all the roads.
