Zulu monarch Goodwill Zwelithini does not support the changing of the Mangosuthu highway to Griffiths Mxenge.
The king made this clear when speaking to hundreds of people in Mahlabathini, Ulundi, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday.
He was attending the inauguration of Mfanuvele Buthelezi as Inkosi of Mahlabathini.
It was the first time that His Majesty had spoken out on the ongoing and highly sensitive matter of the renaming of Durban streets and places.
The name change debate has pitted the ANC against opposition parties, including the IFP and the DA.
His Royal Highness said he supported the correction of history by changing names of some of the facilities and streets.
But he said he did not support the proposed renaming of the Mangosuthu highway.
The IFP, supported by DA, is opposing the process.
At the inauguration, IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said his contribution to the struggle was being undermined by plans to change the name of a highway named after him, SABC news reported on Saturday.
The eThekwini municipality council plans to rename the Mangosuthu highway, in Umlazi, a township outside Durban after UDF leader Griffiths Mxenge.
Mxenge, a lawyer, was murdered by apartheid security policemen in the 1980s.
Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini said he supported the name-changing process - but was against the changing of Mangosuthu highway to that of a UDF activist.
The proposed name change has sparked tension in a province which was once rocked by political violence.
