Kagiso has embarked on an ambitious development programme to encourage mass participation in sports in the West Rand township.

It started last weekend with a sports festival at the Kagiso Sports Complex and was attended by more than 400 youths in the area.

They took part in three sporting codes which have proved to be popular in the township - soccer, volleyball and netball.

Stephen "King" Ramalepa, one of the organisers of the event, said they appreciated the support from various sports organisations in Kagiso.

"We want to see more Kagiso residents, especially the youth, participating in other sports codes like cricket, rugby, softball, athletics and golf.

"We won't be able to produce quality sportsmen and women if we neglect development.

"Top soccer clubs and mining houses used to go to schools on Wednesdays in search of talented runners and soccer players in the past."

Ramalepa said they had roped in experienced coaches and umpires to conduct clinics for the schoolchildren in Kagiso.
