She is a Good Samaritan who has dedicated her life to care for needy children. If it was not for her, 28 orphans would be homeless.
This is what Lucia Ngobeni loves doing. Ngobeni, 54, left the comfort of her home in Pimville, Soweto, to establish a place for destitute children in Orange Farm.
Known as Zenzeleni Youth and Children's Village, Ngobeni is assisted by 10 volunteers - five caregivers and another five who do general housework.
On site there is also a doctor who attends to the medical needs of the children.
For survival, the village buys live chickens, slaughters and sells them. The social services department has also helped to issue children with birth certificates so they can access child-support grants.
Though the place caters for children infected and affected with HIV-Aids, Ngobeni does not invade their privacy by talking about it.
Ngobeni also accommodates children who come from dysfunctional families and helps them reunite with their parents.
The children attend school in Orange Farm. She plans to initiate farming projects so that they don't rely on hand-outs but are able to sustain themselves.
