"It is estimated that the government will be coining a whopping R258million a year from the additional fee on 8,6 million registered motor vehicle owners," said DA spokesman on transport, Stuart Farrow.
The extra fee for on-line vehicle registration transactions, announced by Radebe on Tuesday, takes effect on July 1 and is to be used to cover the cost of maintaining eNatis.
Farrow said the DA would submit a parliamentary question asking why Radebe didn't announce the fee at the launch of eNatis, whether other funding methods had been explored, who would maintain the system, and what this would cost.
Tasima, which developed eNatis, is due to hand it over to the department at the end of the month.
The system has been plagued with problems since it was implemented.
