A move towards an integrated, one-ticket, mass-transit transport system is being considerably boosted by the pending 2010 Fifa World Cup, which will see the nine host cities receiving most of the attention, Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa said at a press update on government policy last week.
The "coordinated national human resources development strategy" will also contribute to an improved transport system and will involve increased skills development and training with a focus on Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa's (Asgisa) priorities.
Government is making a massive investment in infrastructure . Over R415billion is being poured into the economy. The lion's share is going to Eskom's new power station and to Transnet's railways, ports and freight logistics .
Because of the size of this investment, government has identified a need for increased monitoring of the implementation and impact of this infrastructure roll-out, Mpahlwa said.
These measures are tailored to increase economic efficiency, while another set of priorities has been designed to boost dynamic growth sectors of the economy.
Mpahlwa said that stablising the ups and downs of the rand against the dollar and euro is also a key part government's drive to increase employment and grow the economy.- BuaNews
