Major celebrations of the World Athletics Day will be held in Polokwane where 896 athletes from Limpopo Athletics (Lima) will compete in different events at Peter Mokaba Stadium tomorrow.

The proceedings, which feature track and field events, start at 9am and finish in the afternoon.

The participating athletes will be from the province's five districts and will be between the ages of 14 and 19 years.

Attlee Maponyane, Lima's president, said yesterday they will use tomorrow's event to identify talent among young athletes.

"We want to expose our youngsters to athletics events and what a better way to do so than in World Athletics Day celebrations," Maponyane said.

The Lima boss also appealed to parents, coaches, technical officials and other sportsmen and women of Limpopo to come in big numbers to celebrate the day with them.

Molatelo Malehopo, ASA's development manager, said there will be other athletics events taking place around the country and the world to celebrate the day.

"We urge all the athletics clubs across the country to encourage their athletes to compete in various events on Saturday. Last year we had great fun in Rustenburg and this year we have chosen Limpopo and we expect fireworks in Polokwane," said Malehopo, who revealed that his boss, Leonard Chuene, will attend the proceedings at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
