The February reshuffle of Mpumalanga's cabinet has been blamed for the delay in tarring roads in Lefiso.

The reshuffle saw former MEC Fish Mahlalela making way for David Mabuza, pictured, as new roads and transport MEC.

A source in Dr JS Moroka municipality confirmed the allegation.

"When Mabuza took over in February he stopped all projects to check if they were approved correctly," said the source who wished to remain anonymous.

Irate residents of Lefiso village in Marapyane said the project was stopped without consulting them.

Sam Mmutle, the local headman, said: "The construction company came to the village towards the end of January but called it quits in mid February."

Vukane Mnyandu, roads and transport department spokesman, gave Sowetan another version.

"The department had to wait for the final road design."

He said a shortage of gravel and water contributed to the delay.
