Trio takes on Beethoven

Sowetan Reporter

A chamber music concert, The Archduke at Wits, featuring some of the country's top instrumentalists, is to take place at Wits University on Saturday May19 at 7.30pm.

Beethoven's popular Archduke Trio is one of the pinnacles of the chamber music repertoire.

Many celebrated artists have sought to scale its heights and it has become the touchstone for piano trios worldwide.

Many of the greatest instrumental soloists have been drawn to it because its musical and technical demands elicit the highest artistry from its performers.

Three of South Africa's finest and best-loved musicians will join forces to perform the Archduke on Saturday.

Violinist Marc Uys, formerly the leader of the Sontonga Quartet, Marian Lewin, the doyenne of South African cellists, and pianist Malcolm Nay will team up as a trio for the first time.

Nay, one of this country's most sought-after musicians, has previously performed separately with Uys and with Marian Lewin, but this unique and ideal marriage of three exceptional talents promises to make the concert a memorable occasion.

Also on the programme is another favourite, the Mendelssohn trio in D minor, opus49.

The composition is a work whose melodious outer movements surround a brilliant scherzo, a relative of the famous scherzi Mendelssohn wrote for A Midsummer Night's Dream. The concert will be in the atrium of the South West Engineering Building on Wits east campus.Tickets are available from Computicket at R60.
