The Ethekwini municipality will embark on a recruitment drive for volunteers for the Fifa 2010 World Cup preliminary draw in Durban on November 23.
"We are looking at recruiting 60 volunteers," said Julie-May Ellingson, head of the municipality's strategic project unit and 2010 programme.
"The training of the volunteers will begin in August. We decided on 60 [volunteers] because Fifa has informed us that they will also bring along theirs.
"At this stage we do not know the number of volunteers that Fifa will be bringing. From our side, first preference will be given to the residents of KwaZulu-Natal.
"Of course, there will also be a need to employ foreigners based in KwaZulu-Natal to assist as translators for people who do not speak English.
"Everybody who will be attending the preliminary draw must feel welcome. They must be home away from home by enjoying our hospitality."
The draw will take place at the International Convention Centre, which recently underwent a R700 000 upgrade to prepare for the World Cup.
"As Durban, we are not new to the hosting of global international events. The most recent one was the A1 World Cup of Motorsport," Ellingson said.
"Others were the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement, International Aids Conference, World Conference Against Racism and Vodacom Challenge."
Danny Jordaan, the Local Organising Committee chief executive, said: "We are pleased with the developments in Durban.
"I was there when they hosted the A1 Grand Prix, the atmosphere was incredible."
