Millions of South Africans rely on public transport, especially taxis, to get around.

Millions of South Africans rely on public transport, especially taxis, to get around.

The reality, though, is that millions of poor and working people daily risk their lives the moment they set foot on unroadworthy buses and taxis.

Our story yesterday about the unimaginably unroadworthy taxi plying the Bekkersdal-Westonoria route begs the question: how do taxi operators justify keeping such deathtraps on the road?

The only reason such vehicles are still on the road is because some road officials are not doing their jobs or are simply corrupt.

The laudable taxi recapitalisation programme is taking too long. Meanwhile greedy taxi (and bus owners) have free rein to kill and maim the public.
