Former apartheid security agents were some of the key people who selected members of the elite crime fighting unit, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

ANC activist and Cosatu deputy president Sdumo Dlamini was speaking in Pretoria yesterday during the 20th anniversary of the bombing of Cosatu House in Johannesburg in 1987.

He said the very people who were part of the system that bombed Cosatu House 20 years ago served on the panel which decided who should be part of the NPA when it was formed.

"When the ANC tried to get 500 comrades into the NPA, they were blocked," said Dlamini.

Dlamini's criticism follows that of the ANC's Mathews Phosa who drew similarities between the NPA and the apartheid police agency.

Both leaders' alegations fly in the face of President Thabo Mbeki's recent plea to ANC members not to attack the NPA and other organs of state. Phosa had questioned legislation regulating the NPA.
