A Mpumalanga man, who allegedly killed his sister and burnt her house, is in hospital after he stabbed himself with a knife.

The 33-year-old man from Acornhoek, allegedly stabbed his sister to death with a knife after an argument at the weekend.

Provincial police spokesman Captain Leonard Hlathi said the victim, Maria Makhubedu, 38, ran away and locked herself inside the house.

"But the suspect, who was armed with an axe and a knife, broke down the door, entered the house and fatally stabbed his sister," said Hlathi .

The suspect then allegedly set the house on fire. When police and members of the community arrived at the scene, the man fled and police gave chase.

"By the time we caught him, he had wounded himself with the knife, apparently trying to commit suicide," said Hlathi.

Hlathi said the man was in hospital and would appear in court when he recovers.
