Several documents were burnt and some cleaning materials destroyed after a government mortuary caught fire in Mtubatuba on Sunday night.
Police said they did not suspect foul play though the cause of the fire was still a mystery.
The mortuary was a police facility, but is now used by the Health Department.
Police on night duty spotted the fire coming from the mortuary storeroom and from one of the small offices.
Police spokesman Jabulani Mdletshe said they had been informed that the fridges were still in working condition.
He said an inquiry had been opened to establish the cause of the fire.
