Fana will wait for Valero

The mooted world title unification clash between Mzonke Fana and Venezuelan knockout specialist Edwin Valero, will not take place as yet.

The mooted world title unification clash between Mzonke Fana and Venezuelan knockout specialist Edwin Valero, will not take place as yet.

This was revealed by Fana's promoter Branco Milenkovic after reports surfaced that he would be engaged in negotiations with Valero's promoter and his friend Akihiko Honda, to finalise the fight during his visit in Japan.

Milenkovic is currently in Japan where his charge Simpiwe Vetyeka failed in his bid to take the WBC bantamweight title from Hozumi Hasegawa, who is also promoted by Honda.

The Serb-born naturalised South African promoter is good friends with Honda. Their friendship helped Vetyeka get a crack at Hasegawa's title despite the East London fighter's lack of international experience.

With Fana having just won the IBF junior lightweight title, reports had it that a unification clash with Valero, who is now based in Japan, was on the cards. Valero stretched his unbeaten fight record to 22 bouts, all by knockouts, when he stopped Japanese challenger Nobuhito Honmo on the card of Vetyeka-Hasegawa bout.- Sapa
