The Education Department has suspended a 32-year-old high school teacher of KwaMsane, near Mtubatuba, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, for the alleged sexual abuse of a boy.

The suspension comes after the teacher appeared in the KwaMsane magistrates' court yesterday.

He was accused of sexually abusing the boy, a pupil at the same school.

The teacherhad been staying with the boy since February, during which time he had allegedly abused him.

Police spokesman Jabulani Mdletshe said the boy reported the matter to the police.

He said the teacher was arrested on Wednesday.

The case was postponed to later this month when he is expected to apply for bail.

The department said it was disgusting for such allegations to be levelled against teachers, who were trusted figures in the community.

Ntokoza Maphisa, the department spokesman, said: "A decision to suspend the teacher pending internal investigations has been taken. Should he be found guilty he will be dismissed."
