A member of an organised car-hijacking gang was gunned down by police in a shoot-out on Wednesday evening near Lichtenburg in North West.

Superintendent Keaobaka Moses said police were hot on the heels of the gang who had hijacked and killed Inspector Daniel Montemedi Chaleko, a member of the anti-hijacking task team.

Chaleko went missing last week Wednesday travelling between Zeerust and Lichtenburg. He was allegedly kidnapped and shot in the head by the gang who had been terrorising the area.

His body was found on Friday by a passer-by in the veld at Springbokpan village and his car, with bullet holes and blood stains, was found near a dam, a few kilometres from Lichtenburg.

Moses said the gang shot at the police who returned fire. One suspect was shot dead, two were arrested while the others managed to flee.

Police recovered Chaleko's cellphone and fire-arm, as well as four firearms and a pump-action gun.

Chaleko will be buried tomorrow at Rietpan village in Lehurutshe near Zeerust.

Moses urged anyone with information to contact him at 082-428-7831. - Elisha Molefe
