Instead of confining themselves to serious issues that include housing and unemployment, the council has now divided the KwaZulu-Natal province over its contentious resolution.

Renaming streets, buildings, roads and other structures in Durban strictly in honour of heroes of the ruling party is always a difficult process, especially if decisions to that effect are rammed down the constituency's throat.

The struggle for liberty in this country was fought for by all freedom-loving people from all political affiliations - black and white.

We reiterate that proper consultations must therefore take place before such a process is concluded.

There are already threats of violence and boycotts against the move.

A snap survey has revealed that residents reject the proposed changes.

The eThekwini council, which has been voted into power by the people, must listen to the people and rescind this resolution.

Otherwise their high-handedness will beget public fury.
