Johannesburg inner-city dwellers and hawkers yesterday vowed to resist reported plans by the metro council to move them out of the city in preparation for the Soccer World Cup in 2010.

Shereze Sibanda, of the Inner City Resource Centre, told about 100 protesters at Beyers Naude Square: "We say no to evictions for 2010. If they want to build a world-class city, we want to be there.

"They evict people and say they are cleaning the city. We are not rubbish," she said.

Sibanda said about 215 court orders had been granted for the eviction of people from inner-city buildings.

Sibanda told the protesters to bring the city to a standstill if their demands were not met.

People at the gathering were urged to attend the inner-city summit, convened by Mayor Amos Masondo, tomorrow. - Sapa
