Inner-city organisations are up in arms against the Johannesburg city council, accusing it of not listening to the poor.

The Peoples' Summit Initiative (PSI), which represents inner-city dwellers and informal traders, yesterday called on the council "to stop relying on consultants" and engage with the city's civil society.

The PSI was supported by organisations including the South African Council of Churches in Gauteng, the National Traders' Retail Alliance and the Inner City Forum.

Inner City Forum spokesman Chereza Sibanda said: "Our fear is that the alternative accommodation [that the court ruled must be found for people who are to be evicted] might be outside the city."

Spokesman Jo Mdhlela said the PSI will protest against evictions, hawker harassment and service cutoffs.
