Usually, if you want to enjoy some sunshine and feel the wind in your hair, you have to spend a lot of money.
Cabriolet cars are generally much more expensive than normal cars. But with the VW Beetle cabriolet, this luxury is distinctly affordable without a drop in quality.
Our used test car this week is one of VW's cutest runners on the road with a lot of presence.
Our 2005 VW Beetle 2litre cabriolet turned a few heads though this car has been around for quite some time. This shows that this little bug is still contemporary and won't appear dated soon.
Our test model was still in good condition and even the black soft-top was clean and neat. This is mainly because of the quality of the materials used in its manufacture. One often sees the roof of a soft-top faded in colour by the sun.
In this case, the top is as black as it can get and it goes very well with the metallic silver of the car.
The interior is modern with rounded shapes everywhere to complement the curvey exterior of the car. The silver and black combination of the exterior is repeated inside for a stylish look. The top of the doors are covered in silver and the dash as well as the seats are black.
One can clearly see that this car has only done a mere 40000km on the clock when looking at the bucket-type black leather seats which are still in good condition.
We found the Beetle a pleasure to drive in and around the city. This was because of its small size, but also because of the smooth gearbox and light steering. Driving at freeway speeds, we were amazed at how quiet the cabin is for a car with a soft-top. The 2litre power plant provides more than enough power to comfortably cruise on the freeway without the need to constantly change gears.
Power delivery from this four-cylinder engine is an impressive 85kW with torque of 172Nm. The result is a 0-100kmh sprint in about 11seconds.
The engine is coupled to a great five-speed manual transmission delivering power to the front wheels.
Luxuries include a front-loading CD, aircon, power steering, 16-inch alloy wheels and electric windows.
Safety wise, the Beetle comes with dual airbags and ABS brakes with a stability control programme.
At R195000, almost R50000 less than the price of a new one, this is a sensible buy for the daring individual.
