Instead of relaxing at home or attending Workers Day commemorations, the 200 residents of Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban yesterday were hard at work rebuilding their shacks.

They used the building material that survived the blaze that destroyed their homes and left three dead on Saturday night.

The dead are Ephraime Phungula and Ben Mhlakwana - the mother of two children including a six- month-old baby boy. The children escaped unharmed.

The mother put the baby on the roof of the shack and he was rescued by neighbours. The older child also managed to escape the flames.
