The National Stadium in Gaborone is to undergo a major facelift estimated at P50 million (about R57 million).
This, according to the Botswana government, is part of their plans to benefit from the 2010 World Cup finals.
The finer details of the plan are still being discussed between the government and the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC).
The tender committee is reported to have met last week. According to government officials, all the details pertaining to the project will be made public once the finer details have been finalised.
Currently, the capacity of the stadium is 20000 but the plan is to increase it to between 40000 and 45000 to accommodate big international games.
The Botswana government has established a task force to research the possibilities of ensuring that their country also benefit from the 2010 World Cup. BNSC chief executive officer, Kitso Kemoeng, said they were delighted by the developments to upgrade the stadium.
Meanwhile, the proposed Francistown Intergrated Sports Complex is one of the venues that Botswana hopes will be used as a 2010 World Cup training venues. The facility will be located on the Franscistown-Maun road, opposite the airport. It will have have a 27000 seating capacity and will cost in the region of P270million (R308million).
