The work of the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has begun to change the city's ugly inner city to what they hope will be a major facelift.
This means that by the time of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the Johannesburg inner city will have undergone a transformation.
Most of the old, derelict office buildings will have been turned into residential units, hotels or business centres.
Places such as the building that formerly housed Afsa Financial Services, which has been occupied by illegal tenants, will also be renovated.
The prices of lofts in some of the places being developed range from a R550000 to R1million.
Rent for the lofts range from R4000 to R10000 a month.
"Our aim is to let everybody know that there is affordable accommodation," says Lael Bethlehem of the the JDA.
"Regardless of a person's income, there is a place for all to live in the inner city."
