Sowetan and several of its key partners have successfully staged a drama festival with a difference, primarily aimed at curbing crime.
The Stop Crime Drama Festival - one of the pillars of your nation-building newspaper's anti-crime campaign - also unearthed and honoured talent.
Conceived by Dramatists Against Crime a decade ago, the festival's North West leg was sponsored by the North West arts and culture department and the National Arts Council.
Sowetan has "adopted" the festival as a nation-building effort.
It was staged at the Mmabana Mmabatho Cultural Centre in Mmabatho, North West, earlier this month.
Awards for the best production was given to Siyashizila, written for the Itshotshovi Theatre Group from Alexandra and directed by Vusi Simelane.
Best script accolades went to Freedom , written by Rapula Khumalo and performed by Buster Arts Productions from Tlhabane, North West, and The Voiceless by Tlotlego Thwane and Kagiso Montoedi.
Lucky Molapo and Morris Morolong, the directors of Faces, shared the best director award with the cast of the play Hoping For The Best.
Director Nkagisang Mokobori and actors in G Most Productions' Streetkids took the most promising production award.
