South African softballers are favourites to defend their men and women's titles in the Zone Six Championships in Lusaka, Zambia, at the weekend.

The biennial competition will be played from Friday to Sunday.

The South Africans swept the boards in the 2005 event that was held in Lesotho.

Polelo "Mr Magic" Masola, the manager of the national men's squad, Simunye, said they had assembled a team of capable players to successfully defend their title in Lusaka.

"All our players in both squads will ensure that nothing stands in their way from returning with their titles. I don't doubt their potential that they will succeed.

"We are not only going to win this tourney, but also to offer our competitors free softball lessons. They are our brothers and sisters and we must teach them new techniques of the ball game," said the burly Masola.

Masola doubles up as a technical committee member of Limpopo Softball Association. Other countries who will feature in the championships are hosts Zambia, Lesotho, Botswana and Namibia.
