In-form James Kamte can expect stiff competition from Omar Sandys when they tee off in the Samsung Swazi Open at the Royal Swazi Sun and Country Club in Swaziland from Wednesday to Saturday.
Kamte, who was supposed to be in Europe taking part in the Italian Open, never made it because he could not get a flight on Sunday. There was only a flight tomorrow which was too late for the tournament.
So, he will be going to Swaziland instead.
Sandys has a good track record in Swaziland and stands a good chance of finishing in a respectable position in this event.
He tied for eighth in last year's tournament with Jaco van Zyl and will be taking part in the prestigious competition after coming from a 15th place finish in the Eskom Power Cup Classic and a tie for 10th in the Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour at the tough Arabella Country Club last week.
Last year's winner, Thomas Aiken, will not be playing because he is in the US on the Nationwide Tour. This gives black golfers a chance to challenge for honours.
The format of this 72-hole tournament is Modified Stableford. Two points for a birdie; five points for an eagle; eight points for an albatross; one point for a lose; minus one point for a bogey and minus two points for a double bogey.
Kamte is one of the most exciting players who can win this one on the day.
Other black golfers in the field are John Bele, Heinrich Bruiners, Tongoona Charamba, Eugen Marugi, Raymond Mathonsi (Swaziland), Johannes Mokoena, Irvin Mosate, Lindani Ndwandwe, Sandys, Teboho Sefatse, Moses Shongwe (Swaziland), Mzwandile Sikobi and Toto Thimba.
