A taxi driver was shot dead by a hitman in full view of members of the public in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.

As in past taxi-related rifts, commuters find themselves caught in the middle of the hostilities and without alternative transport.

As many as three associations are apparently fighting over routes, suggesting that the government's vaunted regulation process is fraught with problems.

It is imperative that the latest flashpoint be resolved urgently to prevent a flare-up in other areas.
