Eikenhof, south of Johannesburg, is back to normal following protests over the shortage of houses.

Eikenhof, south of Johannesburg, is back to normal following protests over the shortage of houses.

On Tuesday, disgruntled residents from the informal settlement in the area protested and barricaded roads with burning tyres.

They say the pace at which they are being given RDP houses at Lehae is too slow.

One of the residents, Mandla Mnisi, said: "We've waited for the houses for a long time. All we hear are excuses."

Residents' leader Mbulelo Mantsithi said: "All we want is for people who qualify for the houses to be able to move in."

Addressing the residents yesterday, Siphiwe Sibanyoni, of the housing department, said: "Some of the houses are not suitable for occupation. We can't allow you to move into unsafe houses." - Tebogo Monama
