SanDiskR and Sony corporations have agreed to a memorandum of understanding to develop the SxST (S-by-S) memory card specification, with high-speed transfer technology .

SanDisk and Sony have a successful history of co-developing and promoting flash memory products.

With this high-performance and high-reliability memory card, both companies are targeting workflow improvements for professional camcorders and non-linear video editing systems.

The SxST memory card connects directly to computer systems through the high-speed PCI-ExpressT bus. ExpressCardT has been rapidly adopted by PC manufacturers, giving the cards broad support in post-production hardware.

SxST memory cards are expected to be available later this year .

Benefits:

l High-speed data transfer of large video files. Transfer speed is twice as fast as PC CardT-based storage media with high-speed transfer of large files, such as high-definition video, to PCs for non-linear video-editing.

lThe SxST memory card is half the size of PC CardsT. This enables the design of professional camcorders that are smaller and lighter, while still offering high storage capacities.

Eli Harari, chairman and chief executive of SanDisk, said: "I look forward to the exciting new products that SxST memory cards will enable."

Yutaka Nakagawa, executive deputy president and executive officer of Sony Corporation, said: "I am delighted by this new technology for the professional video market."
