Judge Ron McLaren yesterday confirmed that R119872, payable to Thamsanqa Khambule, was held in an ABSA Bank account.
The state alleges that the money is the proceeds of a crime and Khambule should not receive it.
Khambule has been charged with the murder of Thabani Duma.
He is scheduled to appear in the Howick magistrates' court on May 7.
The investigating officer, Detective Constable Agrippa Mnikathi, said Khambule took out funeral policies in Duma's name and nominated himself as the beneficiary if Duma died.
In the papers, Mnikathi said: "On the day of his murder, Duma was with Khambule in his Toyota Conquest. While they were travelling between Boston and Bulwer, Khambule told the driver of the car to stop."
He said Khambule and Duma got out of the car and walked some distance along the road. Six shots were heard and Khambule returned to the vehicle alone.
Khambule submitted claims to the insurers and was paid R59794 by Sanlam, R30000 by Old Mutual, R20000 by Liberty Life and R10078 by Avbob.
The insurance company Assupol repudiated Khambule's claim pending an investigation into the circumstances of Duma's death.
Khambule reportedly did not contribute to Duma's funeral costs and did not attend the funeral. - Sapa
