Mitchell made great strides

I am an African woman and a great lover of football. I watch most PSL matches on TV and enjoy each one, regardless of who is playing - although I am an Orlando Pirates supporter.

I am an African woman and a great lover of football. I watch most PSL matches on TV and enjoy each one, regardless of who is playing - although I am an Orlando Pirates supporter.

I was impressed watching a match on Sunday afternoon with the first woman referee, Deidre Mitchell, to officiate at an elite league match.

Her standard was good and in some instances much better than her male counterparts.

I must express my disappointment in the manner in which the commentators carried on. Her decisions were justified, but according to the commentators, none should have been made.

They thought none of the yellow cards should have been issued because this was spoiling the game.

I must also point out that some players' behaviour was appalling and unwarranted. If I were her, I would have taken the same decisions.

The attitude demonstrated by the commentators, players and fans leaves much to be desired.

My intention was to enjoy a game of football, but I ended up observing and supporting the referee's decisions instead.

Congratulations to the PSL for giving a woman the chance. All South African women football lovers are very proud of Deidre Mitchell.
