More than half of the 48 000 derby tickets were sold before noon yesterday and it is speculated that the "sold out" signs for the clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will go up sometime tomorrow.
With the two teams lying in unfamiliar mid-table, you would have expected tickets sales to take off a little slower but the derby will remain special.
"We expect the sales to pick up sharply when people get paid on Wednesday [today] and tickets to be sold out at the latest on Thursday [tomorrow] morning," said Orlando Pirates' financial manager Darryl Joselowsky yesterday.
That the game has no impact on the championship, which has already been won by Mamelodi Sundowns, has failed to stop private suite tickets from going through the roof. The remaining private suite tickets are selling for R1 700, which includes a full bar, morning snacks, lunch and afternoon snacks.
The stadium had sold its packages for R1500 and R1 000 for their 70-seater suites, which are sold out. There are still suite tickets that can be purchased at the Bucs office go for R750 for the sports lodge situated on the eastern stand.
All packages exclude parking with a park- and-ride service arranged from pick-up points at Nasrec, Standard Bank parking (corner Simmonds and Pritchard), Bezuidenhout Park and Montecasino.
On the playing front, Amakhosi have suffered a blow as key striker Shaun Bartlett is out suspended and so are former Pirates captain Jimmy Tau and midfielder Gerald Sibeko.
Amakhosi have a good pool of strikers, though, in Kaizer Motaung junior, Serge Djehoua, David Radebe and Louis Agyemang.
The "Ghost" cannot start salivating over a first win over Chiefs since the 2004-05 season in the absence of Bartlett and company.
